ATA Calculator 3.1.1

The American Thyroid Association has developed thyroid nodule calculators intended to provide guidance and recommendations pertinent to specific clinical scenarios involving thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. These tools are designed to support clinical decision-making but do not encompass all potential approaches or methods, nor do they exclude alternative strategies. It is important to recognize that these calculators do not establish a standard of care nor guarantee particular outcomes.

Clinical treatment decisions should be made based on the independent judgment of healthcare providers, considering each patient’s unique circumstances. The use of these calculators is not a substitute for comprehensive clinical assessment and professional expertise in diagnosing and managing patients. They are constructed from the best available evidence in the literature and reflect the expert opinion of ATA members at the time of development. Given the complexities of thyroid management, many issues have not been addressed through randomized controlled trials, and as such, the evidence underlying these tools may not be fully comprehensive. Additionally, individual patient variations cannot always be captured by these calculators.

It is also important to note that these tools do not include all methods of care nor exclude other treatments that may be appropriate. Ultimately, adherence to the recommendations provided by these calculators is voluntary, and their application should be determined by the treating physician or healthcare team. Clinical judgment should guide their use, with careful consideration of the patient’s specific clinical history and physical condition.
